CELTIC supporters today paid tribute to the legendary Billy McNeill on the 50th anniversary of his debut for the club.
Cesar, captain of Jock Stein’s Lisbon Lions and one of the most successful managers in Celtic’s history, took a bow at half-time during Celtic’s 3-0 win over Falkirk as almost 60,000 fans gave him a standing ovation.
The cover of the Matchday Programme carried iconic images of Billy in his various guises and included a special, in-depth tribute to Cesar inside.

Billy made his Celtic debut against Clyde in the League Cup on August 23, 1958. It started a playing career that spanned 17 years and culminated with his appearance in Celtic’s 1975 Scottish Cup final triumph over Airdrie.
In total, Billy won nine league titles, seven Scottish Cups, six League Cups and, of course, one European Cup for Celtic.
As manager, he guided the club to four league titles, three Scottish Cups and one League Cup during two spells in charge.
The ever-popular Billy remains a major part of Celtic Football Club to this day and his leading place in Celtic folklore is forever assured.
