Voted as the Greatest Ever Celt in 2002, Jimmy ‘Jinky’ Johnstone will never be forgotten by anyone who ever had the fortune to see him in full-flight.
A dynamic, tricky winger, Jinky’s likes will probably never be seen again.
The quintessential tanner ba’ player, Jimmy honed his skills dribbling round bottles and made his name by leaving opposition defenders looking equally as static.
A former Celtic Park ball-boy, the diminutive, flame-haired attacker enjoyed his best years under Jock Stein and was outstanding in the 1967 European Cup final.
In Madrid, weeks later, at Alfredo Di Stefano’s Testimonial, he was at his irresistible best – even the Real legend wanted his picture taken with Jinky.
He died in 2006 after a brave battle with Motor Neurone Disease, and the outpouring of tributes in the days after perfectly illustrated his standing in world football.
Quite simply: Jimmy Johnstone was the best.
